Wahoo Speedplay Troubleshooting Guide
This is a known consideration with direct-mount shoes combined with Wahoo Speedplay pedals. The issue is almost always caused by one of three factors: over-tightening of the screws, insufficient lubrication of the spring, or a mounting surface that is not perfectly flat. Follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
The four screws that attach the Spring & Housing (the spring mechanism) to the shoe must not be over-tightened. Use a torque wrench and set it to a maximum of 2.5 Nm. If the screws are too tight, the spring cannot expand freely, making clipping in extremely difficult or impossible.
Yes, this is essential. Apply a small amount of PTFE (Teflon) Dry Lube to the cleat spring. This significantly reduces friction and ensures a smooth clipping motion. Do not use wet lubricants, as they attract dirt and degrade performance.
TIP: Wahoo recommends using PTFE Dry Lube as standard practice with every Speedplay cleat installation.
The Chronos Speedplay Direct Mount shoe features an integrated CNC-machined aluminum mount block in the carbon shell sole, which guarantees a perfectly flat surface. Flatness is therefore never the issue. What can happen, however, is that dirt accumulates on the mounting surface — think sand grains or small stones picked up when walking in the shoes. Always thoroughly clean both the aluminum mount block and the underside of the cleat before installation. Even a tiny pebble can cause the cleat to sit at an angle, making clipping in difficult.
The Spring & Housing must be correctly oriented: the text 'Left' belongs on the left shoe, and 'Right' on the right. The beveled edge of the spring must face toward the pedal to facilitate the clipping motion. Incorrect orientation makes clipping in difficult or impossible.
